Polyurethane resin

Insulate aluminium with Polyurethane resin

Aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat, cold and electricity, and is used in many products because of these properties. Where in many cases they are desirable properties, it can be an obstacles in cases where thermal or electrical insulation is required. By providing aluminium profiles with a thermal and/or electrical interruption while retaining all of its positive properties, these obstacles become a thing of the past. And that is exactly what we do at Thermal Breaks, insulating aluminium profiles with Polyurethane resin.

Thermal break

In addition to the problems of transmitting heat and cold, uninsulated aluminium frames often also cause condensation on the inside of the frame. The consequences of this are an unpleasant indoor climate, moisture problems and even mold formation. Fortunately, there are various techniques for properly insulating aluminium profiles for window frames and doors. This is called a “thermal break”.

Polyurethane resin insulation

Polyurethane resin is a common technique of thermal insulation. Hereby the inside and the outside of aluminium profiles are separated with a Polyurethane core. By mixing two components we create a strong, insulated core. By subsequently sawing away the bottom of the insulated part, the inside and outside of the profile are separated from each other, and the thermal and/or electrical insulation is obtained. In addition to the normal version of Polyurethane resin, we can also insulated with a more flexible and elastic core. The benefit of this type of Polyurethane resin is that in later processing the profile is easy to be bend, without the insulation breaking or falling apart.

This are the pros and cons of Polyurethane resin insulation

The application area for Polyurethane resin is large, and is used for all kinds of applications such as façade systems, and different kind of windows and doors. Because of the curved shapes, the more flexible variant is most often used for caravan and ship windows.

Pros of Polyurethane resin

  • Polyurethane resin requires only one profile and this can significantly reduce the costs of development for a new profile. Because the basic profile consists of only one part, only one extrusion mold is needed. This makes Polyurethane resin relatively cheap.
  • Because only one profile is required for Polyurethane resin, you have less material management.
  • Polyurethane resin is more flexible than Polyamide strips. Therefore you can easily bend the aluminium profile without breaking the insulation lane.

Cons of Polyurethane resin

  • Polyurethane resin has a temperature resistance of 85 degrees, which is lower than Polyamide strips. Due to the lower temperature resistance, the profiles must undergo a surface treatment such as powder coating or anodizing first. However, this does not apply when the profiles are wet-painted.
  • On average, insulation with Polyurethane resin has a lower insulation value (Uf-value) than rolling in with Polyamide strips. This can be compensated by adding several insulation lanes in the profile.

We insulate the following aluminium profiles

Bij Thermal Breaks isoleren we de volgende aluminium profielen met giet-isolatie:

  • Brute profiles

This concerns profiles that have not yet undergone a surface treatment such as powder coating or anodizing.

  • Mono-color profiles

This concerns profiles that have the same color on both sides of the aluminium profile.

We are also able to insulate the following advanced profiles:

  • Profiles with multiple insulation lanes
  • Profiles with both small and large insulation lanes
  • Profiles to be bent in later processes
  • Profiles up to 7.5 meters in length

From insulating to protection and packaging

To protect the profile against scratches we are happy to help you with the application of protective foil on the profile. We also do the packaging. Of course in the way that is most convenient for you. We can place protective strips between the different profiles, or wrap the profiles in plastic.

Transport

The trucks of our transport partner drive through the Netherlands and abroad daily. It can therefore be an interesting option to let us arrange the transport of your aluminium profiles.
